| We
started out in 1993 with our first American Eskimo Dog. My wife & I
had gone to a barbecue at a friend's house where we met an American Eskimo.
It was love at first sight! My wife, who was never a dog person, then spent
the following few weeks being pestered to, whimpered to, barked at, and
occasionally licked on the face until she gave in to the idea of getting
a dog. I, being a highly impulsive individual, then ran around for the
next three days until I found a puppy that I liked and bought her
out of a local pet shop. We named her Yoshi, after the Supermario brothers
character. Yoshi quickly became the love of our life and instantly turned
Nancy into a dog person. We began reading about the breed & about dog
showing in general. We quickly learned that we had made a mistake by purchasing
a dog out of a pet store for several reasons. To begin with, we have no
way of finding out about her genetic history, so we don't know if there
are any health problems that she may be prone to. We also did not know
what her parents looked like, so as a puppy, we had no way of knowing what
she would end up looking like. There is also the ethical dilemma of possibly
supporting a backyard breeder
who sold the dog to the store in the first place. In our opinion, the two
most important things in the breeding of dogs is health & the maintaining
of the breed standard.
We have learned a lot over the few short years we have been in the world
of showing & breeding dogs, and we learn more all the time.
Since getting Yoshi, we have expanded
our doggie family and have bred a litter. We attend as many shows a year
as time and coat condition allow for. You can see pictures of our dogs
& puppies on the picture pages. We have also started working with American
Eskimo rescue. Rescue dogs can range from dogs that can no longer
live with their families, strays, and unfortunately, neglected or abused
dogs from backyard breeders or puppy mills. Our rescue efforts to
date include four Eskies from a backyard breeder, and one that needed a
new family due to a change in the owner's lifestyle. The resilience
of the Eskimo's spirit and inherent desire to bond with people have helped
them to get placed in appropriate, nurturing homes. Most are adult
Eskies that are displaced and can make excellent companions for those who
want a dog, but not necessarily the problems that go with training a puppy.
Our dedication to this breed and the plight of unwanted animals has made
this a rewarding part of our life with Man's best friend. You can
read more about American Eskimo rescue on our rescue
page or you can go to Heartbandits
which is a national American Eskimo rescue organization.
Backyard breeder: We use the term "backyard breeder" to refer to irresponsible breeders. There are people breeding all different breeds of dogs with little thought being put into the physical characteristics or temperament of the dogs. They tend to have little knowledge of the breed or its genetic line. They do not stand behind the soundness of their dogs, and do not try to match the appropriate dog personality with the right person. Frequently, these are the unfortunate dogs that end up in shelters or with rescue groups. Breed Standard:
The breed standard is the written description of the physical and temperament
characteristics that has been defined for each individual breed by the
governing breed club. Basically, what the "perfect" version of the dog
is supposed to look & act like.
