| This past
weekend (9/7/97) there was an ad in our local paper for some American Eskimo
Dogs. The people were moving and wanted to sell their "breeding pair" of
dogs because they just couldn't care for them at their new home. Nancy
called them today to offer them help if they could not sell them to prevent
them from ending up in the shelter. It didn't take more than a minute or
two for these people to decide that they would be willing to give them
to us. Dogs that they had for a couple of years happily tossed away to
the first person to call them. They were, however, able to continue to
care for the six week old puppy that they already had a buyer for (how
altruistic of them).
Nancy went to their home to pick them up. These dogs were left on their own in a yard with no visible water or food available to them. These dogs have never been house trained, since they were never allowed in the house. None of them had ever been on a leash before either. There were no medical records, the previous owners thought that one of them had gotten a shot a few months ago but wasn't sure. I hate to say it but this is the typical "backyard breeder / puppy-mill" operation. These dogs had been breed with no regard to their health or the health of the puppies. As soon as they became inconvenient they were thrown away with the old clothes, and broken toys that won't be going to the new home. There are four of them. Two miniature females, one miniature male and one standard female. All of them will have their shots updated and they will be tested for Heartworm. If you are interested in adopting one of these dogs they will be given to approved homes. We only ask for the cost of shipping them to you, and an agreement that you will have them fixed. If your feeling extra generous we can always use some extra help on the Vet costs. Even if you can't provide a home for one of these dogs please consider a donation to help us continue our rescue efforts. Thank you. Rescue Part II (9/23/97): We have done pretty good so far with the rescue dogs. Two of the dogs have found permanent homes. One is in a foster home & the last one is still with us. We have gotten quite a few calls but nobody has worked out yet. This last dog doesn't get along real well with other dogs so she needs to be in an only dog home. We were also contacted by someone looking for a puppy who thought we were the people who we got these dogs from. She ended up buying the puppy from her. She brought it to us so that we could evaluate it medically, I guess she didn't want to pay a Vet bill. This puppy was around 7-8 weeks old and weighed 1 1/2 lbs. (Most American Eskimos at that age weigh about 7-8lbs.) We gave her some puppy formula, Nutra-cal, & dewormed it for her. We also tried to convince her to take the puppy to a Vet, but I don't know if she will. We were also told that these backyard breeders are planning another litter in a few months. It makes me sick to think that these people are willing to put living animals through this kind of life for the sake of a few extra bucks in their pocket. Hopefully the next installment of this page will include a happy ending for the last two dogs. Rescue Part III (11/11/97): Yeah!! We finally found a home for Snowball, the Female standard, that we still had with us. She went to a home with 2 young children to play with and hopefully there she will stay for a long & happy life. There is still the one dog that went to the foster home but having our home back to normal is a great relief. I'm sure it won't be long before we have to rescue another dog so anyone interested feel free to contact us. Even if we don't have something available we should be able to refer you to someone that does. 3/24/98:
4/7/98: The dog above has found a family. 6/14/98: Just
an update on our rescue efforts. We have had several calls in the
past few months from people looking for rescue dogs and some people looking
to give dogs up. We have not been posting them because they all have
been fortunate enough to have been placed in homes very quickly.
8/:31/98: Today we received 3 rescue eskies from NC. They were taken from a county in NC that only provides an open concrete slab with a fence around as its animal shelter. Dogs are taken there and if not claimed within a week they are destroyed! How pathetic! As of now, all we know about these dogs is that there are 2 females & 1 male probably. The females are friendly but the male is a bit more shy, this may improve with some time in a good loving home. They will all go to the Vet tomorrow & then the home search will begin. If you are interested please contact us ASAP. 9/12/98: Here's an update on our current rescue dogs. They are estimated to be between 2 & 4 years old. The two females tested positive for a mild case of Heartworm. Fortunately, it has been caught early enough to treat. One of them will need to undergo treatment for active heartworm. The male has a serious respiratory infection and is undergoing antibiotic treatment. He is doing better, but, he is not out of the woods yet. The male also has some pretty bad foot problems, lots of cuts on the bottom of his pads but they are healing well. All of them have adopted US very well! It never ceases to amaze me how an animal who has obviously been treated horribly by humans can still have some trust and love for us. The females are ready for adoption for anyone who is willing to give them the loving home they have been denied. The male is not ready yet but we are still hoping. E-mail us for details and questions. 10/13/98: Ok, I've been a bit slow updating since the last one... The two females have found homes (yea!!) we thought this would be a lot tougher considering the heartworm problem but fortunately we found two families willing to take care of the problem. The male did not make it. He began having heart failure and we had to put him down. The day we delivered the second female to her new home we also got in another female rescue. This one is about 7 years old and she is a mini. She will have to go to an only dog home, she doesn't play well with other doggies but is quite people friendly. So far she appears to be in good health but we haven't had a chance to get her to a vet yet. 1/5/99:
All right, this time I've been real lazy about updating
things, but you know how the holiday season gets. The dog above stayed
with us until last week when she got a new home. We had one other
dog come and go since and now we have a new doggie looking for a family.
She has a touch of kennel cough but seems to be getting better over the
last day or two. Please remember your dog doesn't have to be put
in a kennel to catch kennel cough. It's a virus, highly contagious
among dogs, and they usually live through it if they are a normal, healthy
dog. However, for a not so healthy dog or a puppy it can be very
serious. It's also preventable. Like many of the diseases that
we have to protect our pets from; the prevention (a vaccine) is much easier,
more reliable, and less costly than trying to cure a pet that catches the
disease. Anyway .... this doggie is probably between 1 &
2 years old a bit on the meek side and wants a family of her own.
