The American Eskimo dog is also known to many as a Spitz or White Spitz.  They are a nordic breed that came to America over a hundred years ago with European immigrants.  They are a companion dog and an excellent warning dog.  They are a member of the Spitz family.  The American Eskimo comes in three recognized sizes;  toy (9" to 12"), miniature (12" to 15"), and standard (15" to 19").  The standards usually top out at a weight of 25-35 pounds.  They have a dense undercoat and a long silky/course outer coat.  They share other characteristics of the Spitz family with their pricked ears and a tail that lays over their back.  The adult American Eskimo stays surprisingly clean despite its white coat.  An American Eskimo can roll in mud covering itself entirely (and they love to do it).  However, once it dries the dirt will flake off and they will look relatively clean again in a few hours. They benefit from a brushing  one to two times every two weeks, but require little formal grooming.  Males and spayed females will blow their coat once a year,  and unspayed females will blow the coat twice a year.  The puppies start out with a cottony, fluffy coat and gradually bring in their stiffer adult coat.  The puppy coat is much more difficult to manage than the adult coat, being very prone to matting.  They do well in hot or cold climates.  Their long outer coat helps shade them from the burning sun and they should never be shaved.

The American Eskimo is a wonderful family pet, blending itself into a variety of households.  They act as a warning dog (they will bark to alert you to anyone approaching), but warm up to visitors readily.  They are great with children, and tend to walk away from rough play before becoming aggressive.  This is an extremely intelligent breed, and do well in formal obedience & agility trials.  Because of their flashy personalities and high trainability, they have been used in circus acts for many years.  Training should begin early and with positive reinforcement.  American Eskimos know they are cute and can use it to their advantage.  They are an excellent household pet and should not be kept away from their family.  As with any dog, the American Eskimo should be socialized to children and other dogs at an early age.

The American Eskimo has a life span of 15 to 20 years and enjoys good health and energy during that time.  There are few genetic problems with the breed.  Eye problems and hip dysplasia are found, but are very low in incidence due to screening and responsible breeding.  An American Eskimo with  one or both eyes being blue is a disqualifying flaw in the show ring but, is not necessarily a an indication of any health problems.  Dogs with these and/or other flaws should not be bred, but this does not detract from their value as a family member.

Most responsible breeders will provide a health guarantee.  They sell their dogs (pet or show) under a contract and will screen perspective buyers to match the right puppy to their new family and their lifestyle.  We honor this practice and are always available to assist with troubleshooting or breed information.   We look forward to your questions and comments.  If  we don't have a litter when you contact us we are always available to recommend other breeders that we feel share our goals and ethics (and don't forget, there's always rescue dogs looking for homes).
